The match was played at Vélodrome de Vincennes, a banked cycling venue with 20,000 seats which also hosted other events like the football, rugby, cycling and gymnastic.
Unlike typical Test matches, this game was unique in several ways. It saw 24 cricketers take the field instead of the usual 22, and none of the players had ever represented their national teams. This is particularly notable given that England had been competing in Test matches against Australia since 1877. But it was not a unusual situation at that time as in many other sports for Great Britain mainly stronger club sides took part for the country.
Curiously, the Paris Test of 1900 was also the only international cricket match played that year. However, it is not recognized as a first-class match, as it deviated from the standard format by being an 11-a-side contest and was limited to just two days of play.
Interestingly, the winning team was awarded silver medals, while the French side received bronze. In addition to their medals, both teams were also presented with miniature versions of the Eiffel Tower as keepsakes. This happened because the games were not officially recognized as Olympic Games at that point of time.
The 1900 Games were actually part of the Great Exposition, also known as the World’s Fair. Unlike today’s Olympics, there were no official medals awarded. Instead, winners received trophies or medallions as their prizes.
The few press outlets that covered the events at the time referred to them by various names, such as “International Championships,” “Paris Championships,” “International Games,” “World Championships,” and the “Grand Prix of the Paris Exposition.” The term “Olympic Games” was not commonly used in connection with the events.
Years later, the medals were reclassified, with the winners’ silver medals upgraded to gold and the runners-up receiving silver. It wasn’t until 1912 that the match was officially recognized as an Olympic event, solidifying its place in the annals of sporting history.
Neither side played a national cricket team for the match. Great Britain was represented by the Devon and Somerset Wanderers club, who happened to be touring France and were invited to participate in the Olympics in Paris.Their opponents, a team called All Paris, consisted mainly of British expatriates living in France.
Out of the 24 players who took the field over the two days, only two had previously played first-class cricket: Alfred Bowerman and Montagu Toller, both representing Great Britain. It was decided before the match by both the captains that they will field 12 players which caught the scorers off guard as the last name had to be handwritten on the scores.
